What happens when you confront a Narcissist?
Typically, under the light of any type of scrutiny , what you will witness, when dealing with a Narcissist , is an adult temper tantrum. It would seem Gayle King found this out when she recently interviewed R. Kelly, in light of the recent explosive docu-series “Surviving R. Kelly”, was aired back in January. Over 50 people were interviewed for the series, including his ex-wife, former staff, and many other victims who have come forward.
Most recently , he has landed himself in the news again, as he is currently facing 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse brought against him by Chicago prosecutors , in February of 2019. This is following a decade long of public scrutiny for similar charges back in 2008. In 2008, he was found “not guilty”, after Chicago prosecutors failed to prove to a jury that he was the individual on a sex tape , involving a minor .
In textbook Narcissistic fashion, Mr. Kelly vehemently denied any type of wrongdoing with all of his victims who came forward to be interviewed in the docu-series , choosing to reply with the blanket statement ; “they’re all lying on me”.
He then launches into a tornado- like tirade about how “big of a heart ” he has , and how he believes this to be the problem. He attempts to blame social media as well. The interview crescendos with him standing up , arms flailing, screaming about how this is impacting his ability to have a relationship with his children.
He delivers a meltdown of epic proportions , eyeing and addressing the camera, all along, commenting, “I hope you got this on camera”. We witness, first -hand , what happens to a Narcissist when confronted. Every defense mechanism in the book is pulled out . He delivers a performance worthy of a stage, and YET, does not directly answer Gayle’s questions.
After viewing the docu-series several times , because of its relevance to the topic of Narcissism , I realize that his ex-wife , Andrea Kelly , is taking him to court over hundreds of thousands of dollars for back child support . I wonder if that is getting in the way of his ability to have a relationship with his children.
A Narcissist will use multiple deflection techniques out of desperation , to try and throw the confronter off course , as they are unable to accept responsibility for any of their actions .
